I've got a few books on my nightstand I'm trying to get through before I start at Fuller. The first one is Rick McKinley's book, This Beautiful Mess. Rick is the pastor of Imago Dei in Portland, OR and is now a blogger. The first I heard of Rick and his church was through Matt Casper after he attended Imago Dei for research for his book, Jim and Casper Go To Church. When I saw the subtitle of Rick's book, "Practicing The Presence Of The Kingdom Of God" I was intrigued. I haven't been able to get too deep into the book as of yet but so far Rick is working through the "kingdom" parables and images, reflectively modernizing these images while not being very prescriptive. I appreciate this approach. It's humble and keeps from pigeon-holing the message.

Second, Paraclete Press recently released the paperback version of Frederica Mathewes-Green's The Illumined Heart. Some from the Matthew's House clan were really influenced by this book, which brought about an interest in Eastern Orthodoxy and using the Eastern Orthodox prayer book for some time. I'll share more on her writing later.

And last, we hosted a house party last night to bring awareness to a great local organization called, Jubilee Economics Ministries. One of it's founders, Lee Van Ham spoke. Brooke is now on JEM's board of directors. JEM is co-sponsoring another teach-in at our house next month. Ulrich Duchrow will be speaking at the Hawthorn House on Saturday, October 6. Last night, I started reading Property For People, Not For Profit by Ulrich Duchrow in anticipation of his visit.

Get in touch with me if you're interested in coming.
