bitter sweet

Doesn't the title of this post just about describe it all? So much of life is both bitter and sweet. I feel as though my life has never been richer with good friends, good things happening in our community and a wonderful family. But financial pressures loom close by, etcetera, etcetera. It makes the whole thing feel so fragile.

The temptation is to run off, protect the goodness in life. Hoard it. Be "safe". But we never quite enjoy the sweetness of life when we do that, do we? The bitterness trying to encroach our lives overwhelms us. You have to hold that sweetness with an open hand. Hold it out in the sun, enjoy it while it is there and love it for what it is. It's humbling. It's grounding. It's reality.

I'm totally with you on this one--I've been tempted lately to retreat, withdraw and protect, but aware that all of those leave me with having destroyed what I find particularly beautiful in the process: community, sharing, wide open possibility.

Things were stolen from our garage this week--the third time we've had things taken from our house in the past year or so. It's so tempting to build bigger barriers between our house and the community, but not, I think, what I'm most hungry for, in the end.

Our son loves to juggle, and there was a You-Tube Video of kids juggling the Diabolo with Verve's BIttersweet Symphony playing in the background...
The irony of watching someone juggle with the words:
'Its a bittersweet Symphony -
Thats life...
Try to make ends meet,
youre a slave to money
then you die...'
was so symbolic I cried...

A word to/from the wise: "There is nothing new under the sun..."

And so it goes...
