Last night, after the kids went to bed I sat down to start reading Pete Gall's My Beautiful Idol. I'm typically not drawn to memoirs but thought I'd read a couple chapters before going to bed. The next time I looked at the clock it was almost 2:00 am and I was on chapter 23. This guy is good. I'm terribly annoyed by how much of my own masculine identity seems to resemble similar flaws as this guy. This guy is easy to read, not in the short book kind of way, but in the "forget you're reading and feel more like someone is talking to you" kind of way. I don't agree with everything he says but that isn't the point of a memoir. This book has sucked me in. It's making me think about the power of experiential truth, the power of personal story just might change the way Christians look at things sooner than later... more than their intellectual counterparts. I'm pretty certain I'll finish the book tonight. Tell you more then.
