soundcheck: A Tribe Called Red - Electric Pow Wow Drum

I'm not into house or dance music, though I have a short list of friends that have done their best to change that. On occasion I come across something that does catch my attention from this genre. A Tribe Called Red is one of those. And one of the reasons that I like them so much is because of the blending of distinct culture expressions. One of the things I love about living in the city is watching what kind of creative work comes out of the place where cultures cross. Historically though, the crossing of different cultures has not always been positive. ATCR has taken traditional Native American music and is blending it with dance beats and sounds. Similar to the Nortec Collective from Tijuana, ATCR's live performance incorporates imagery that they have "remixed." Most often, it is depictions of Native Americans from films–which are often not positive images. ATCR takes those film clips and reclaims the imagery as their own for a new generation. I love it.
