Yes, I'm shamelessly promoting both my daughter and Eugene Cho. To tell the truth, I've never met Cho. But I'm inspired by his work. This is what makes my daughter a better person than I. She doesn't need to be inspired by someone such as he. In fact, she has no idea who he is. But she decided that this year she would do something quite similar to what Cho promotes through One Days Wages. Paige turns 9 this month. She told her mom and I that she didn't need anything for her birthday. Instead of getting presents, she wanted to invite her friends to an "unbirthday party" (themed after Alice in Wonderland) and ask them to bring donations for nine year old girls living at San Diego Rescue Mission. She's nine. And she's already getting her friends in on one of the things her heart breaks most over: homelessness. I, like so many others, need to see things like what Cho does so that I can say, "I can do that too!" But Paige didn't. She just knew it was the right thing to do. So, maybe she's not cooler than him. But I'm super proud of her and she's certainly cooler than me.
- Consider getting involved with One Day's Wages on your birthday.
- If you live in San Diego, consider supporting the Rescue Mission. Our city can't seem to decide how they feel about homeless folks, but the Mission knows and does amazing work. Many of us at First Pres' are honored to be their neighbor and partner in such things as the Interfaith Vigil coming up.
