Friday Mixtape - September 6, 2013

As I mentioned recently, I'm changing up my weekly postings a bit. As it relates to music, I'm attempting to consolidate my barrage of discoveries into one weekly post. Here's the first!

Let me know what you think!

You can also head over to Spotify and Shuffler to listen to my "playlist" and to see what I've been listening to lately.

First is from The Cloak Ox. Catchy, jangly indie rock tunes. Check out their EP Prisen while you wait for the LP Shoot The Dog to come out later this month. Here's a foretaste:

I saw Speedy Ortiz last month at Comet Ping Pong here in DC. I was impressed. Can't wait to hear more from them!

The Julie Ruin consists of former members of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre. Good stuff! Their album Run Fast came out in August.

Typhoon gets pegged in the same category as many other popular alt. folk groups these days. But the do some weird stuff that sets them apart in my opinion. Check out "Young Fathers" off of White Lighter and you'll see:

Talk about weird, Marnie Stern makes some spacey, guitar-shredding rock music. This track comes from the Adult Swim Singles Series:

Pyyramids hail from Los Angeles, CA and are creating something that's an intriguing mix of electronic, soul and rock. Check out "Paper Doll" off of Brightest Darkest Day:

I like M.I.A. A lot. She offers a creative form of hip hop that fuses cultural genres and never fails to impress me. Here's a track off her forthcoming album, Matangi:

Roomrunner hearken back to some of post-hardcore '90's groups I was known to be sucker for. Guess I still am. "Vaporize" is off of their full-length Ideal Cities.

Just needed to make sure that you're paying attention! I'm also a sucker for sludgy metal. Phantom Glue delivers! This is "Captain Keith Pierce" off of A War of Wight Clones:

Discovered Archie Powell and the Exports while I was in Chicago this summer. "Crazy Pills" is off of their latest album Great Ideas In Action. Good ol' fashioned poppy, white boy rock 'n roll!

That's it for this week. Hope you enjoyed!
