What Is A 'Parish'?

par·ish noun \ˈper-ish, ˈpa-rish\
: an area that has its own local church and priest or minister

The term "parish" is frequently used interchangeably with "church." But they are not the same thing. A parish is the area in which a local congregation ministers. It is their primary area of mission. In the era of the commuter church, we've often forgot this concept of church. But a new book coming out this spring attempts to recover the heart of this term. Based on their book trailer, The New Parish by Dwight Friesen, Tim Soerens and Paul Sparks looks like a good read:

NOTE: A novel that I've appreciated and wrestles with this conception of church is The Diary of a Country Priest by Georges Bernanos.
